Add new Sermon

Adding a sermon is mostly straightforward, but I’ll show you the general idea.

Click on “Add New”, of course:

Planned feature: Pop-up calendar picker.

There are a lot of fields to fill out, and you can figure them out pretty well, but let me draw your attention to the Series/Preacher/Service boxes. On a normal install, they look like this (minus the arrows):

Once you’ve added some Preachers, Series, and Services, you can actually go into the settings and set a default, so now it might look like this:

Planned feature: Ability to set default item per user.

Planned feature: “Add new” from here. (Currently required to go into the term page.)

I’ll also quickly point out the side box, wherein you can add tags to sermons. It looks exactly like the built-in WordPress tags box (because it is):

Adding Verses:

Adding verses is pretty straightforward, once you get the hang of it. Here’s the box:

Planned feature: Option to display books alphabetically or normal.

How it works:

1) The “From” field will always pick the lowest possible verse, if there is anything in it. So that:

  • Leviticus 1 becomes Leviticus 1:1
  • Exodus becomes Exodus 1:1
  • John 4:12 becomes John 4:12

2) If there is nothing in the “Through” box, the end verse is the highest possible verse of the “From” field. So that:

  • Leviticus 1 becomes Leviticus 1:1-17
  • Exodus becomes Exodus 1:1-40:38
  • John 4:12 becomes John 4:12

3) If there is something in the “Through” box, the end verse is the highest possible verse of the “Through” field. So that:

  • Leviticus 4 becomes Leviticus 4:35
  • Exodus becomes Exodus 40:38
  • John 4:12 becomes John 4:12

That’s it! It’s a pretty standard interface actually. Play around with it, it’s pretty resilient.

Adding Files:

Adding files follows the same approach as adding files to a WordPress post, so if you are familiar with that, you can probably skip this. The only difference is that some of the options have been removed, since they did not apply.

Planned feature: Display attached files near the button, so you don’t have to click through to see what’s attached.

Click on this button:

It will make a pop-up screen, which looks like this (click to embiggen):

Planned feature: Import sermons from external URL.

If you are adding a file from your computer, select that button. A prompt will pop-up, and you can select multiple files to add. In this example I added a single picture. Once the files are uploaded, you’ll see them look like this:

At this point, you can select “Save All Changes” and close the pop-up, using the “Escape” key, or this “X”:

Alternately, for the more advanced, you can click “Show”, which will pop open a few options for the files. If you upload an image, you can set that image as the sermons “Featured Image” (click here to read more about it, if you are unfamiliar), and you can even do some light editing.

You can also delete the file, if you didn’t mean to upload it, or you can leave it on the server and not link it to the sermon:

Planned feature: Optional to set MP3 tags based on sermon information, or vice verse.

You can also attach files to a sermon that are already in your media library:

To do this, click “Show” on whatever file you would like to attach, and then select the “Attach to Sermon” checkbox. Once you’ve done that, click on “Save all changes”, and it will attach it to the sermon:

You should now have all your data filled out, so you can click on “Publish”:

That’s it!
